LIVE UP THE ORIFACE REVIEW by ARMIN FISCHER
THE CHEESEMAKERS - LIVE UP THE ORIFACE REVIEWED BY ARMIN FISHER OF GERMANY WITH KIND PERMISION ( I THINK ) . :"Get yourself off" is a great opener for a gig: raw & straight.Same to "Hero" ; for me far better than the studio version: vocals are more in the front, bass & drums with more enthusiasm .

Punkrock song "Don't say it with flowers" could have been anotherStooges song (but without their blues background). Should have a
permanent place on cheesemaker's live-setlist ;-). Chessemakers have their own "There's no drinking..." song: Bob Bizarre. Okay, drums & vocals are really different, but the heavy guitar & bass is strongly influenced by the Weller song. My heavy soul is jumping.

"These things.." a 10min. track: to me about 2min. too long. Maybe the wa-wa part is to long/dominant, although I like the guitar
sound. Nice bass on this track. Similar to the studio recording.

Uptight & Sheila's are powerful songs, but I prefer Sheila. Want some more lead guitar parts for Uptight... or is the lead guitar too much in the
background? Another punk track, Fly buster, has a shearing guitar and a small chorus, but it works (for me).
The last two songs are fine "classics". Funtime kicks a** and is one of
my favourite songs on this cd. Good, raw chorus with pushing bass & guitar and straight drums.
What should I say 'bout the last song - simply "alright"!

In comparison to the studio recordings, the cheesemakers sounds fresh & raw. For me the voice is much better, because it's a bit darker and in the foreground. The band is kicking the songs...and I like it.

THE CELLAR CLUB , SOUTH SHIELDS - 23rd FEBRUARY 2002
THE NIGHT THE CHEESEMAKERS REALLY MADE THEIR MARK ON THE LABEL SCENE
Tonight the band headlined a label Showcase , by default really . The headline act was due to be DARRELL BATH but he 'rang in sick' on the morning of the event and couldn't make the trip from London so we gladly stepped into his shoes - my they were a tight fit ! In the end it was justified as the majority of the crowd were there to see us .

First of three was the majestic Egos from Aylesbury , freshly signed to the label and ready to go to slaughter but they held their own . Not even prepared to play , a phone call on the morning rectified that when they were told - 'bring guitars and you can play!' An offer they couldn't refuse .
They ran through a great set , highlights of which were a staggering cover of Mamma Mia which has to be heard to be believed and their classic stoner anthem 'Rat Race' . Just the greatest lyrics I've ever heard - 'I can't be arsed !!!' Genius

Next were Essex boys Johnny Zhivago who came up just for this gig to show their support to Mr.Tun and Changes One . These are top boys and by rights should have been headlining - all things considered , but they were happy to get up and play and take the applause . A slashing set mixed with old and new songs was well recieved by the now bulging crowd and we'll be seeing much more from them oon . Always a pleasure to be associated and play with the Zhivagos .

Well , it was time , and we had managed to slow our drinking pace to be able to get up and play at 10.30pm . The last few gigs have seen us cut our set for varying reasons but there was no way we were doing that tonight . We strode on to the strains of 'Ride Of The Valkyrie' which did the crowd up a treat and they got the full monty - from the stripper which appeared earlier as well !From opener Come Out , through EP crowd pleaser Bob Bizarre and onto the full length opera 'These Things happen...' the band were on top form . A major high point was the reaction to Higher Than You which is rightly regarded as a label favourite . A very strange thing to see people you hardly know singing the words .
We powered on for a full hour and 20 minutes including a genuine encore of Flowers and Sheila's . Felt drained afterwards but satisfied that we'd done a good job and continued on the upward spiral .

A great night for everyone concerned and I feel there'll be many more of those to come .

GREENY'S COLUMN

The great man speaks !!!
THE BANDS HAIRIEST & MOST FERVENT PILGRIM TAKES TO THE STAGE TO SPEAK ABOUT 'THE MUSIC'

'Oriface' is exactly what it says on the case 'Pure punk rawk', great
stuff, sound is a bit rough but that adds to the live edge of it.

Toasted is an amazing, yet disturbing album. I felt the White Trash
EP touched slightly on the darker nature of the Cheesemakers with
'White Trash', and this is truly evident in this album. In a way it
shows the bands multiple sides, one the straight punk-esque rock
tracks, the second, the haunting elements life throws at each of us.
It's apparent(to me anyway) the lyrics of all the Cheesemakers songs
represent and highlight everyday life, but some take it a little step
further and almost play out like psychological fear.A lot of bands
have attempted to cross moods, blending the heavy with the mellow,
very few succeed effectively, the only one that comes to mind is
R.E.M. at the minute but I'm sure there are others. But I do feel the
Cheesemakers have achieved this perfectly. I find myself wanting to
talk about every track but I'll refrain.

'These things happen....' truly is a masterpiece song, yet seems to
say much more than is contained in the lyrics, I felt very haunted by
this track yet loved it at the same time. It's evident the 'Demon
behind the door' theme runs far deeper than I first imagined. 'What a

thing to know' is a personal favourite now too, especially the solo
version at the end of the first side of the tape, sounds great.
'Magic' is also an amazing song, yet the intro sounds very much like
a piece of music I remember hearing in a movie, it's been messing
with my head since I heard the track now as I can't remember what
movie it was, sure it had Pacino in though, it's a bugger actually as
it's one of my favourite pieces of music. Good choice
of sound clip interludes too, the album intro is great, the young
frankenstein clip merges nicely into the mood too. Also good
selection of covers, nice to see Dandy Warhols feature.

There was one thing that really messed with my head though, the song
flow of 'Just One Smile...' to 'My Room' to 'My Brain Hurts', from
chilled out, to getting dizzy, to 'Oh my god, what the fuck?!'.
Actually nice touch but caught me off guard first time.

Overall some exceptional tracks, as much as I love rock music, theres
something special about the kind of music that can truly chill you
out, that late night music, that stirs all the thoughts deep in your
mind, and unlocks true clarity; combine this with some quality
indie/punk rock and you're certainly onto a winner. A hauntingly
powerful and very accomplished album that will get much play in my
house. Also looking forward to the 'Cuban Paint' album, if this
is anything close to a taster, I'm sure i'll love it. In addition to
the new Cheesemakers album looks like it's gonna be a good year for
music.

WHAT PEOPLE HAVE SAID !
Them Cheesemakers are causing a bit of a stir.

Might have to widen the doors in the shop !! (-:

the excellent Cheesemakers cd I'm going to write some great things about this one when I get some time, it's fantastic .

I've heard The Cheesemaker live already, so if that's anything to go by, the EP must be very very good :-))

While Ian was asking about artwork, my favourite has to be the artwork on the cheesemakers, don't know why, just like it....

top of the list is The Cheesemakers White Trash EP great set of songs.

I think my favorites would be a tossup between the B-Movie Heroes & the
Cheesemakers. My favorite song is "Higher Than You" from the Cheesemakers EP.

As I have said before The Cheesemakers have been the surprise package
to many. My favourite Cheesemakers track keeps changing. I love Bob Bizarre live and Higher than You on the CD best. Andy and the lads have plans for a full length album in 2002.

the cheesemakers are cool, i love that "Sheila's On The Bus" song, it's different, i like it. the artwork is pretty cool as well, quite inventive. ciao everyone matt

New Zealand - A copy of one of the albums is supposed to be in our Xmas parcel from the UK ...so we'll be spreading the Cheesemakers talents far and wide down here!!!
